Rights Natural or Manmade?
Part IV
The Origin of Rights (Human); a Christian Perspective.
When did they first appear?
From where did they derive?
The Rights of Man began with the origin of man – at the moment of creation as illustrated in the book of Genesis.
Genesis is a Greek word meaning “origin,” source,” “generation”, or “beginning.” The original Hebrew title Bereshith means “In the Beginning,” and it was in the beginning that God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). After crafting the Earth, He formed the world and spoke into existence all other forms of life, and then He said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.’ And so Man was given dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and the cattle in the fields. Eventually, Man was given authority over all the earth, as well as every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. But never was an individual or group of individuals given dominion over the rest (Genesis 1:2-27). Instead, Man was given the ability to watch over each other, protect, and aid in times of hopelessness, for when Man recognized the benefit of doing good, the value of doing so, was good for one and all, which is what God sought.
God created man as a special concept, He blessed them with certain and unchallengeable Rights. Rights that only He could rescind. Distinct from all the other creatures of nature, Man was created in the image of God with certain worthiness and goodness. He was given dominion over the rest of the creation – a love for all things, and it is this love that is the foundation of Man, for it is God’s love – the love for his son Jesus, and the love he has for all the people of Earth. Why? Every person is a unique creation, created with these same sacrosanct Rights (Psalm 139:1-4, 13-14), for the reason that God does not discriminate or show favoritism to any solitary person or group of persons (Acts 10:34). Being an image bearer of God, we all will possess the same characteristics and as such, shall have custody of beholding these Rights for they belong to everyone.
As with other artists, a manual is provided to assist in operating under the same premise as the artist envisions. For Man, it is the Bible. Humanity is provided with the teachings that the Lord is the Creator of all, and from the very rich, to the very poor, He loves each one equally. Throughout the sacred scriptures, humanity is guided to help those in need, to feed and to clothe, to warm with heat as well as love. As followers of Christ do, the rest of humanity should not discriminate based on race, gender, cultural background, or social standing (Galatians 3:28; Deu 10:18; 24:17: 27:19). Social justice is more individual than societal. If by “social justice” the thought is society has a moral obligation to care for those less fortunate, then there must be agreement. The followers of Christ have been commanded to love your neighbor as yourself. Treating others as you would like to be treated. Respect the Rights of others as humanity respects theirs.
These God given Rights are to be extended generation after generation, from the day they are born till the day they die. Yes, children’s Rights are embedded in the Word of God through the teachings to the parents. The biblical instructions direct the parents to protect the rights of their children. Ephesians 6:4 states “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” The original Rights given by God can continue. The ultimate decision in determining where rights originate, man or natural, will be based upon your foundation. God’s story never changes and can be found in the scriptures. Man’s story can change person to person with each revelation. Man needs God; God does not need man to assign rights. It is thought that God confused the languages at the tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9) creating diversity. As previously stated, man cannot assign rights over or to another man. No matter the ethnicity, skin tone, we are all the same race, all created by the same God, all created for the same purpose – to glorify Him.
Stay focused with the mission and genuine love will become the fruit of your labor.
